RUSH is set in North Florida in the Winter of 1941-42, the first year of World War II for the United States. The principal protagonist, Rush Butts, is a newly arrived red-neck from Georgia whose knowledge of the world is quite limited. He is soon involved with Jeb Jenkins, "the richest man in Cedar Key", Eldora Jenkins, Jeb's "beautiful half-witted daughter," and Tom Roberts, the Gulf Oil distributor in Gainesville.
